Şişecam is contributing to the advancement of circular electric mobility through the development of an innovative solar roof glass solution within the ZEvRA project.
As one of 28 partners in the “Zero Emission Electric Vehicles Enabled by Harmonized Circularity” initiative, Şişecam is designing and manufacturing a specialized photovoltaic roof glass for the project’s circular vehicle prototype. The glass is engineered to actively generate electricity, supporting the vehicle’s battery system and improving overall energy efficiency.
Launched in early 2024 and coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute, the ZEvRA project brings together leading research institutions and globally recognized automotive partners. The project supports the European Union’s objective of achieving zero carbon emissions in mobility by 2035 and will run through the end of 2026.
Currently in the implementation phase, project partners are working on the development of a circular vehicle prototype. Within this framework, Şişecam’s solar roof glass transforms automotive glazing from a passive structural component into an active energy-generating system. By integrating photovoltaic functionality directly into the roof, the solution helps reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, enhance vehicle performance, and lower lifecycle carbon emissions.
The solar roof glass has been specifically engineered to minimize the use of natural resources and chemicals during production, while delivering high durability and performance standards required for automotive applications.
The circular vehicle prototype is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2026. Through its advanced automotive glass technologies, Şişecam plays a key role in supporting the sustainability and circularity goals of next-generation electric vehicles.
